Student international travel for university related purposes remains restricted. However, thanks to health and safety measures implemented by travel and program providers and individual nations, expanded access to COVID-19 vaccines and boosters, and careful student planning, the University is allowing a number of students to travel abroad for university related purposes. All student international travel, including travel by graduate students and GME residents and fellows, is subject to the University Policy on Student International Travel and will continue to require a favorable review of local health, safety, and security conditions and individual student plans through spring 2022. See the ISO’s COVID Considerations Page for more information.

Faculty and staff are no longer restricted from international travel for university related purposes. Travel is subject to the University Policy on Faculty and Staff International Travel and requires registration.

The University is monitoring information on Omicron, regional outbreaks of COVID-19 generally, and possible restrictions on travel. Entry and exit requirements can change quickly. Travelers should confirm entry requirements for their destination before their departure date and make sure they have the most up-to-date requirements for re-entering the U.S. All air passengers, regardless of vaccination status or citizenship, must show a negative viral COVID 19 test taken no more than 1 day before travel to the U.S.

All travelers should note CDC recommendations for a COVID-19 Vaccine Booster Shot, follow UVA's booster requirement, and be aware that some countries already require a booster for entry and other countries are expected to introduce a requirement for boosters.

Processing times for U.S. passports remain delayed: 8-11 weeks for routine processing and 5-7 weeks for expedited service.
