The U.S. Department of State has revised Consular Safety and Security Messaging. Changes were implemented 1/10/18. The new messaging replaces what were previously known as Travel Warnings, Travel Alerts, and Emergency Messages. For information on the new travel advisory levels and recommendations, click here.
UVA students traveling outside the United States for University-related purposes are required to submit a petition for an exemption to the University’s Policy on Student International Travel if they are traveling to a country for which the U.S. Department of State has published a travel advisory level of “Reconsider Travel” – color code orange or “Do Not Travel” – color code red.
In addition, students traveling to a region labeled as “High-Risk” within a country must also submit a petition for an exemption to the Policy on Student International Travel. "High-Risk" is indicated by stripes across a country on the Travel.State.Gov online map and is noted in the text on the country's Travel Advisory webpage. A petition is necessary in this case only if the student traveler will visit a region listed as “High-Risk”.
